New policy for street vendors soon

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would soon come up with a new policy for street vendors in the city and also provide them financial assistance through bank loans. The GHMC Commissioner, Somesh Kumar, said the policy to streamline and support the street vendors would be implemented from January, 2005 and steps taken to ensure these small merchants and vendors do not face harassment from the police and civic body staff.

At the same time, to help them avoid debt traps in the form of borrowings from money-lenders at high interests, efforts would be made to assist them with loans from banks, he said.

The GHMC would take up a survey to identify the zone and circle-wise street vendors in the city and issue them identity cards and form street vending committees for their welfare. Mr. Somesh Kumar also directed the engineering wing officials and contractor, the Arrow Constructions, to complete the 320 houses taken up under JNNURM Scheme at Phool Bagh on priority and by December 19. An action plan would be prepared for developing MCH Quarters at Domalguda as model colony.
