JNTU student commits suicide

HYDERABAD: A 20-year-old engineering student, who was reportedly suffering from depression due to poor health and financial condition, committed suicide on the university campus in Kukatpally in the early hours of Sunday.

The victim was identified as Balakrishna, 20, of Moosapet. Balakrishna's father is a mason. In 2010, Balakrishna joined Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Kukatpally campus as an undergraduate engineering student. In the third year, Balakrishna failed in many subjects and he was detained by the university, KPHB sub-inspector (SI) G Ramesh said.

At 4 am on Sunday, Balakrishna jumped from the terrace of the two-storied hostel building and suffered a severe injury to his spinal cord. "He was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital. Friends of the victim said he was upset about the poor financial condition of his family," the SI said.

Balakrishna had a hearing problem. He was in need of Rs 40,000 to buy a hearing aid. As there was no means to get the amount, Balakrishna was depressed for quite sometime. On September 17, Balakrishna went to the JNTU campus and started staying at one of his classmate's room at Manjeera Hostel.

As per JNTU sources, the student was a non-boarder, who was staying with his friends at the hostel. "As per preliminary investigation done by the university, the student came to the campus to be in the company of his friends as his parents requested them to cheer him up. He was suffering from health issues and depression too," JNTU College of Engineering principal N Yadaiah said. He said the student was in the second semester of second year.

"We are planning an anti-suicide drive to create awareness among students," the principal added.

A case was registered under section 174 (suspicious death) of the CrPC and the body was shifted for post-mortem.
