Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister handling Health portfolio T. Rajaiah on Tuesday appealed to the people to come forward wholeheartedly to donate eyes after death and help eradicate blindness in the society.
In connection with the National Eye Donation Fortnight celebrations held from August 25 to September 8 every year, the Deputy Chief Minister signed relevant documents at his Banjara Hills residence donating his eyes after his death. The program was organized by the Saroji Devi Eye Hospital this morning.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajaiah disclosed that some 1.2 million people were suffering from corneal blindness in the country. Stating that while one lakh eyeballs were needed every year, only 40,000 eyeballs were being procured, the Deputy Chief Minister appealed to the people, irrespective of sex, religion, region and caste, to come forwards with eye donations after death. He pointed out that those who donate their eyes would have the rare opportunity of seeing the world with their own eyes after their death.
Hyderabad District Blindness Eradication Institute program manager Dr Ravinder Goud, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital superintendent Dr K Narsa Reddy and others participated in the program.
